Project Value £365,000
Duration 15 weeks
Dates Oct 2017 to Feb 2018
Following the completion of a new-build school by Morgan Sindall, Emchia Asbestos Solutions were appointed to undertake a full soft strip and remove the asbestos containing materials from the redundant school structures, in order to make way for new playgrounds and parking. The survey identified asbestos insulating board (AIB) packers beneath column casings throughout the school, and Chrysotile rope used as insulation to rainwater pipes.
The footprint of the former High School buildings covered 7,000m2, most of which was two storeys. Emchia’s Director Luke Gumbley undertook the risk assessment and method statement for the works with a detailed programme, and decided it was best to split the school in to 7 individual areas to make the enclosures of a manageable size to achieve an optimum programme period. Each area was phased to enable the demolition contractor to work alongside the soft strip and asbestos removal teams. The integration with other trades was successful due to careful planning and regular site meetings from all parties. The project was completed on time and within the client’s budget, with great feedback from Morgan Sindall’s site team.
Emchia’s site manager Stephen Fox achieved Morgan Sindall’s ‘November Safety Champ’ prize. The Morgan Sindall Site Manager David South said “As you can see from the photo Stephen takes his paperwork to a whole different level. All of our visitors have stopped and took photos which have been circulated around our other sites to demonstrate “best practice.” Stephen is a team player and his positivity on site gives everyone a lift.”
