Accrington Hospital

PROJECT VALUE: £235,000

DURATION:  15 weeks

The Accrington Victoria Community Hospital is operated by East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The hospital was founded in 1894 and has looked after the people of Accrington, Oswaldtwistle, Church and Altham for over 125 years. The historic site has been developed over the years through government funding and as part of a recent mechanical and electrical upgrade, Emchia were employed by the NHS Trust to undertake the removal of asbestos to the boiler rooms and 140 metres of underground walkway ducts that serve the hospital site. We also undertook re-insulation works to the various plant, equipment and pipework throughout the ducts and boiler room, once the areas had been encapsulated.

I The R&D survey identified asbestos thermal insulation (amosite and crocidolite) to pipework, walls ceiling and insulation debris to the floor throughout the walkway duct. The hospital had to put restrictive control measures in place to access the duct, making any maintenance work very difficult.

The project has been running successfully with an initial 25 to 30 properties being allocated to Emchia per month. After a couple of months, BCH increased this to 30 to 40 properties per month. The projects are allocated by BCH on an ad-hoc basis, and Emchia’s response time to commence removal works (non-licensed) is within 24 to 48hrs.

The frameworks also includes public buildings and educational buildings that fall under the management duties of BCH or Blackpool Council. We have removed licensable and non-licensable asbestos materials from a number of school buildings to date, including asbestos insulating board (AIB) and thermal insulation. In the homes, the most common material is asbestos containing floor tiles and bitumen adhesive. We have also removed AIB panels and soffits, AIB debris to risers in common areas, textured coating to walls and ceilings, and asbestos cement fascias, soffits and fireplace surrounds.

This is the second social housing framework Emchia Asbestos Soutions have worked on, having also joined the Stockport Homes Group framework which runs concurrently with the BCH framework.

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust’s Maintenance Manager, Ian Turner said: This was a difficult project with many challenges, but I’m glad we chose the right contractor for the job. The end result is absoultely fantastic, our Directors have even been to site to check out the amazing transformation.
