A developer contacted our London office to discuss the remediation of hazardous materials that had been discovered on two land parcels in West London. With the assistance of UKAS accredited consultant, we identified the hazardous materials to be asbestos thermal insulation debris, asbestos insulating board (AIB) and asbestos cement debris.

The sites covered an area of 20 acres in total, all of which had to be remediated in order to develop the land for public use. We quickly got to work on preparing a scope of works that would involve careful hand picking and sifting through piles of contaminated brick rubble, foliage and mounds so that the land could eventually be levelled off and capped by the groundworks team.

We commenced by splitting the site in to manageable areas, and forming individual respirator zones across the site. More heavily contaminated areas involved the use of 360 excavators to assist in sorting through the contaminated materials. The machines were kept in a “clean zone”, with just the arms of the machine reaching in to the respirator zones. Although the drivers were positioned outside of the respirator zones, they had asbestos training along with a mask in their cab, in the event they needed to cross through a contaminated area to carry out repairs to their machines.

Operatives cut back the heavy shrubbery and foliage to a safe level so as not to disturb the materials on the surface of the soil. The materials were then picked and bagged for disposal in the skip on site. Following this the soil was capped off with a suitable material and handed back over to the client.
