NORTH MANCHESTER GENERAL HOSPITAL

PROJECT VALUE: £925,000

DURATION:  30 Weeks

Emchia Asbestos Solutions Ltd were awarded the licensed asbestos removal package for the first phase of the North Manchester General Hospital redevelopment. Following three months of pre-start planning and design coordination with Morgan Sindall and the NHS Trust, our works commenced in July 2021 and are scheduled to run for 30 weeks.

Works or services delivered

Our team were responsible for the safe removal of asbestos from five redundant hospital buildings prior to demolition and redevelopment. The first phase focused on the former Nurses’ Accommodation block, where we carried out extensive removal of thermal insulation to pipework and asbestos insulation debris within ceiling voids.

In parallel, we managed multiple live enclosures within basement service ducts and boiler rooms, removing thermal insulation debris from walls, ceilings, floors, pipework and equipment. To ensure thorough decontamination, we deployed specialist shot-blasting equipment, demonstrating our capability to manage complex, large-scale asbestos removal across multiple workfaces.

At peak, over 20 of our operatives were working on site, supported by our experienced Contracts Director and Managing Director who were involved from design through to delivery. Through careful planning, strong coordination with other trades, and the support of our trusted supply chain, we maintained programme certainty and are on course to finish ahead of schedule.

This project highlighted our ability to successfully deliver a multi-enclosure, large-scale hospital project while simultaneously completing other client works. During the same period, we delivered seven summer school projects for Lancashire County Council and Cumbria County Council, totalling over £250,000 of licensed works - showcasing our operational resilience and reliability even during our busiest time of year.

Strong communication with the NHS Trust’s in-house asbestos consultant and appointed analysts enabled us to quickly resolve technical challenges and keep the project moving. Our proactive and safety-first approach was recognised on site, with our supervisor receiving the “Site Safety Champ” award from Morgan Sindall.
