The short answer is: None, before you apply.

The route into licensed asbestos removal runs through an employer. A licensed contractor hires you, trains you to Cat C standard, arranges your medical and your face-fit test, and builds your competence on site under supervision. The HSE licence belongs to the company, not to you, and the legal duty to make sure you are trained and competent sits with the company too.

What you need before that first job is the ability to pass a medical, a clean-shaven face for respirator fit testing, and a willingness to work strictly to procedure. A CSCS card and a construction background help but are not essential.

What Qualifications Do You Need to Work in Asbestos Removal?

There is no certificate you must hold before applying for an asbestos removal job. Contractors expect to train you.

What the law requires is that anyone working with asbestos is trained and competent for the work they carry out. That duty sits with the employer under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, and a licensed contractor's licence depends on getting it right.

In practice, a new starter on licensed asbestos removal needs:

• Cat C training, the licensed asbestos removal course, typically three days with a UKATA-accredited provider.

• A medical examination before starting, repeated at least every two years. This is a legal requirement, not a formality.

• Face-fit testing for respiratory protective equipment. RPE only works if it seals, and it will not seal through facial hair, which is why licensed asbestos operatives are clean shaven.

• A CSCS card, which most sites expect regardless of trade.

Competence is built after that, on site, under supervision. The training is the start of it rather than the whole of it.

Can You Get Into Asbestos Removal from Construction?

This is the shortest route in, and the CSCS card is the reason why.

If you already work in construction or demolition you understand site discipline, PPE, working at height, and taking instruction. You may already hold a CSCS card. The asbestos qualification ladder maps directly onto CSCS grades you already recognise: the blue skilled work card for operatives, the gold supervisor card, and the black manager card. Progression works the same way it does on any other site.

What is different is that the procedure is the safety measure. Licensed asbestos removal is controlled work in controlled conditions, and there is no version of the job where a corner gets cut to make the programme. Contractors screen hard for people who understand that, and it matters more than what is on your CV.

Coming from general construction into asbestos is a short step. Coming from outside the industry entirely is a longer one, but the industry does train people from scratch, because the procedures are specific enough that experience elsewhere only takes you so far.

What Is Cat C Asbestos Training?

Asbestos training splits into three categories and only one of them qualifies you for licensed removal.

Asbestos awareness training is for people who might disturb asbestos accidentally during other work, such as electricians or joiners. It teaches you to recognise asbestos and avoid it. It does not qualify you to work on it.

Cat B, non-licensed training, covers work on lower-risk asbestos-containing materials that does not require an HSE licence, including Notifiable Non-Licensed Work.

Cat C, licensed training, is what you need for licensed asbestos removal. It covers everything in the categories above plus enclosure construction, site setup including barriers and transit routes, decontamination in airlocks and units, and controlled removal techniques such as wet injection.

The HSE sets out what licensed training must contain in HSG247, its guide for licensed contractors. Three days with a UKATA-accredited provider is typical for operatives and supervisors, though it varies.

Training is not one and done. Refresher training keeps working practices current, and your employer is responsible for making sure it happens. Contractors generally train their own people rather than expecting you to arrive qualified, because the duty to ensure competence sits with them either way.

What Is the Asbestos Qualification Ladder?

Above entry level the qualifications become formal, and they follow a defined structure.

Operatives work toward an NVQ Level 2, most commonly the RSPH Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Removal of Hazardous Waste (Construction) – Licensed Asbestos. This recognises competence in enclosure work, removal, packing and disposal, and decontamination.

Supervisors work toward an NVQ Level 3, recognising competence in overseeing operations, managing a team, and taking responsibility for how work is carried out on site day to day.

Contract managers take the RSPH Level 4 Diploma in Asbestos Removal for Contract Managers. ARCA, the industry association, describes this as the only qualification available at management level in the sector.

Beyond that, professional status is available through membership of the Asbestos Management Institute.

Each qualification supports the corresponding CSCS card, so the ladder is legible from outside: blue, gold, black.

Is There an Asbestos Removal Apprenticeship in the UK?

Not in the way there is for established construction trades. There is no single national asbestos removal apprenticeship you enrol on at a college.

The industry route is employer-led. A licensed contractor recruits you, trains you to Cat C, and you work toward an NVQ while employed and earning. In practice that functions as an apprenticeship, but it runs through the contractor rather than through a course you sign up for yourself. CITB grants and funding are available to contractors for some asbestos training, which is part of why the employer-funded route is the norm.

The practical implication is that the way in is to apply to licensed contractors directly rather than to look for a training course first.

How Do You Apply for Asbestos Removal Jobs?

Licensed contractors recruit directly far more often than through job boards, so approaching companies is usually more effective than waiting for listings.
