Asbestos Removal in Occupied Commercial Buildings
Not all contaminated material has to leave the site, and this is where the cost difference on a large scheme is usually made.
Emchia completes Materials Management Plans allowing the reuse of contaminated or uncontaminated soil and other material in earthworks. Where a plan is in place and the material meets the criteria, soil can be retained and reused rather than classified as waste.
Every tonne that stays on site is a tonne not paid for in disposal, transport and landfill tax, and a tonne of clean fill not bought in to replace it. Case Study: Former Asbestos Landfill, West Yorkshire

RSK Group were appointed to carry out ground investigations across a former landfill site in West Yorkshire on behalf of a national infrastructure client. Emchia was employed by RSK as Licensed Asbestos Removal Contractor, managing and monitoring the borehole operations and disposing of the contaminated solids and liquids arising from the drilling process.
The site covered 70 acres and had been permitted to accept up to 25,000 tonnes of asbestos a year when operational. Piling and drilling through the contaminated cells disturbed asbestos-containing materials below ground and brought them to the surface, which is the core risk on any investigation of this kind.
The notifiable 12-week programme penetrated the contaminated cells in around 30 locations, in places to 50 metres deep. Temporary water containment bunds were created to contain the contaminated sludge arising from the works before transfer into IBCs for disposal, with full-time reassurance and personal air monitoring undertaken at all times.
Emchia arranged asbestos medicals, face fit testing, site-specific asbestos training and supplied PPE and RPE for RSK's operatives to use during their drilling operation. Given the volume of asbestos buried on the site over its operational life, the planning behind the disturbance and control measures was as significant as the works themselves, covering both RSK's operatives and Emchia's team.
